Overview
One of the most upcoming villages in the Costa del Sol (Sun Coast) region is known as Coín. It is basically an Arabic village although its history dates back to Roman era. It is situated in the Valle del Guadalhorce region in the Malaga province. The village Coin has been expanding all the time and many foreigners have started residing in this place. To facilitate these persons, there is a Foreign Residents department in this village. In 1925, King Alfonso XIII gave this place the title of a city although it is only a village.
The travel time to Coin either from Malaga airport or from Marbella is 30 minutes.
History
This village was well known in history well before Romans occupied this place. Marble from Coin quarries was used in the construction of the Roman town, Italica which was known at that time as Lacibi. This village was neglected at the time when Visigoths ruled the Iberian Peninsula.
In 929 AD, Moors occupied this place and Coin underwent lots of changes. Its glory was resurrected. Moors ruled Coin for a period of 500 years and they controlled the cultivation of its agricultural estates and influenced its architecture. The irrigation systems built by Moors were very popular and some of them are still in use. Importance of the village Coin has increased considerably because of oils and wines. At the time of Christian re-conquest in the year 1485, it was taken in a siege. It was alleged that Christopher Columbus was also involved. In 1829, this village was visited by Captain Cook.
Climate
The maximum and minimum average temperatures in this city are 28°C in July and 11 °C in January-February.
Art and Culture
The village has important monuments and churches whose architecture is commendable. Church (alternately known as Caridad) is in this village; San Juan Church is one of the largest churches in this region and is designated as a national monument. At the village center there exists a beautiful plaza wherein the town hall (Old) is situated. The new plaza has the New Town Hall and this has gardens, fountains, parking space, shops and bars. There are a number of forests that you can see and enjoy and these are La Albuquera, La Fuente, Alpujata, etc. Coin has two ferias in a year and these run for a week. This week is full of parades, parties, fairs and lots of tinto de verano (Summer Hue). There are lots of fireworks and funfair with rides for old and young. The last night of feria is mainly for the kids. In addition there is disco, music, etc. during this period.
