Barcelona, that busy seaport city, is Spain's Mediterranean outpost. It can be termed the cultural center of Spain with hundreds of museums, archives, publishing houses, buildings and its Art Nouveau decor. Its annual Book Fair or Fiesta del Libro held on April 23 is a must for every person interested in books and publishing in general. You can also visit during the yearly Feria de Barcelona, a trade fair held at the Palacio de las Naciones exhibition center, where you can make contact with both buyers and sellers.
Archaeology The Archaeological Museum of Barcelona has a collection of prehistoric objects, Greek and Roman art, bronzes, vases and pottery. If you are interested in the sea, you can visit the Maritime Museum which has a full-sized galley from the Battle of Lepanto in 1571 in which Cervantes participated and lost his arm.
Art The Museo de Arte de Cataluña is probably the most important art museum in Spain. Housed in the Palacio Nacional de Barcelona, it has an important collection of medieval paintings, works by El Greco, Velazquez, Zurbaran as well as Romanesque and Gothic paintings and fragments. The Museo de Arte Moderno has works by contemporary Catalan painters, including some of the works of Joan Miro and Picasso.
The Ramblas You can also take a walk along the Ramblas in central Barcelona and browse among the kiosks selling anything from flowers to books and magazines, eat at the many restaurants or simply gaze at the thousands of visitors who throng the street at all times. Later on you can visit the Barcelona Wax Museum or Museu de Cera located at one end of the Ramblas, with its portraits of famous personalities from the world of sport and politics.
La Sagrada Familia Another place to visit is the Templo Expiatorio de la Sagrada Familia or Expiatory temple of the Holy Family to give it its full name or simply La Sagrada Familia, a basilica begun in 1882 and still under construction. Catalonia's most famous son Antonio Gaudi's name is associated with this famous edifice.
Barça Barcelona is famous for its football club FC Barcelona or simply Barça. Whether you are a football fan or not, you can visit its official stadium, the Nou Camp capable of seating 1000000 fans, where you can buy souvenirs.
Climate Barcelona has a mild climate that is neither too warm in summer nor too cold in winter, with January and August being the coldest and hottest months respectively. You can enjoy the many beaches the entire year, except in January. They tend to become too crowded during the season however, so you should make your plans accordingly.
