Toledo, the erstwhile capital of Spain has with it history dating back to hundreds of years. It is considered one of the most spectacular cities in the world and perhaps this prompted the UNESCO to declare it as a world heritage city. This splendid city has winding streets and many historic buildings, museums, parks, good eateries and everything a tourist requires.

According to history, perhaps Toledo is one of the few places in Europe where both Christians and Moors lived more or less in harmonious atmosphere. Considering the strategic importance of this city, the Romans fortified the city and later Toledo became a centre of authority. At the same time it maintained its traditional harmonious bond between two cultures, namely the Moors and the Christians. This can be seen from some of the mosques and churches which exist even to this day. Tourist guides advise the travelers to spare at least about two or three days so that they can go round the city at leisure.

Alcazar:

This castle in Toledo has been used as a place of defense by Visigoths, Arabs, Romans, Moors and even Christians. History goes on to say that in spite of objections from some of the influential people of Toledo, King Alfonso VI built his residence in this castle. However, the castle suffered damage due to fire accident. It was rebuilt to be destroyed again during the Spanish
Civil war and it was repaired after the war.

Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes:

This most imposing Monastery is believed to have been built in the 15th Century. According to history, it was built as per the directions given by the Catholic king and the queen. It is built in Gothic style and is one of the places which no tourist would miss. The other popular monastery is the De Santo Domingo Silos which is believed to have been built in the 16th century. The painting work was done by a Spanish painter. Many monks who still reside in the monastery sell homemade pastries and sweets to the visitors.

Puerta Bisara:

This is actually the gateway to the city of Toledo. This stone gateway has two parts; one believed to have been built during Moorish occupation and the other is the new gate which is believed to have been built in the 16th century. This stone gateway certainly offers a majestic entrance to the visitors into the city of Toledo.
