Places of interest in Spain - Llanes By alston corwin at 2010-05-24 04:37:26

Located in the northern part of Spain, Llanes is a fishing village under the province of Asturias. With a population of about 4000 inhabitants, Llanes occupies an important place in trade because of its harbor. However, the development of the harbor is going on and it would take some time for Llanes to become a full-fledged harbor. Although fishing is one of the main sources of revenue, Llanes is also doing well in terms of developing tourism. Apart from the harbor, the town has many places of interest which are briefly discussed here:
Beach: Undoubtedly the beach in Llanes is most spectacular in terms of natural beauty. The local administration is making every effort to upgrade the facilities on the beach. However, as of now the beach has all the facilities like water sports, fishing, boating, etc. This 30 kilometer long beach is not crowded.
La Pena Blanca:
This is actually a mountain made of limestone. The mountain has two ridges and from the top of the ridge one can enjoy the most beautiful view of the Llanes city and the sea adjoining the mountain. Interestingly, in between the ridges, a hidden valley runs through and it brings in water to the cave nearby. This mountain has a short story; in the year 1937 about 5000 people of Republican army held about 33000 locals and they were held there from September 6 to September 22. But the locals protested and later they were released. This incident is called ‘Battle of El Muzaco’.
Caves:
Llanes has many caves. Some of the caves are very shallow and the flow of water into the caves is almost perennial. Some of the popular caves are Río Belugas and El Cuevón de Pruneda. As mentioned earlier, Speleologists are of the opinion that water which comes into the caves is routed through the valley that exists between the limestone mountain.
Festival:
The city is named ‘Llanes’ after a great saint who lived in that place and Llane became the town’s ‘patron saint’. Festival is held on August 15th in memory of the great Saint. Main feature of the festival includes cutting a Eucalyptus tree in the mountain and then bringing it to the village. The branches of the tree, its bark and the leaves are cut and thereafter the tree is erected at a pre-designated place. Then after certain rituals it is burnt. This festival attracts large number of devotees from far and wide.
