Though they are set closer to Africa than to mainland Spain, the Canary Islands have a unique Spanish flavour. This Atlantic Ocean archipelago consists of seven islands. Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma and Tenerife are all popular tourist resorts, while Hierro and Gomera are not developed to the same degree as the others and remain quiet and unspoilt.

All seven islands have a temperate climate that ranges between 18 and 24 degrees with year round sun. There is such an abundance of natural beauty and bird and plant life on the Canary Islands that four of the seven nature reserves belonging to Spain can be found there.

La Palma has a higher rainfall than the other five more developed islands and this means that it has a greener, lusher environment that is also less built up. Caldera del Taburiente is La Palma’s National Nature Reserve, an enormous crater created by erosion.

Fuerteventura is gifted with long stretches of beaches. It is much favoured by families and lovers looking for sunshine and outstandingly beautiful natural surroundings. Being a small and sleepy settlement, Fuertaventura’s nightlife is much more restrained, and the committed party goers will possibly be better suited to one of the other, livelier islands.

Gran Canaria and Tenerife are the most popular islands with tourists and offer plenty of entertainment and events and a vibrant nightlife in the built up areas of the island. Even here though, it is possible to find the beauty that the islands are famed for and plenty of peace and quiet. Not far out of town, Tenerife’s reserve can be found; Mount Teide, the enormous volcano ranks number three in the stakes for tallest volcano in the entire world.

Lanzarote is the location of Timanfaya Park, another Canary Islands reserve which offers visitors the chance to experience a unique landscape which cannot be found anywhere else in the world, with black sand beaches and lava fields.

Hierro and Gomera are largely undeveloped and have not changed substantially over hundreds of years. The Parque Nacional de Garajonay can be found on Gomero, the site of an age old forest of laurels.

The Canary Islands provide the tourist with a wealth of opportunity to come across a wide range of experiences that Spain can offer, from all night clubs, bars and packed beaches to remote and unchanged villages and scenic natural landscapes.
