Segovia - A Historical Town By alston corwin at 2010-05-18 05:26:31

Segovia is an ancient Castilian town that dates back to pre-Roman times and retains much of the architecture and design that the Romans imposed upon it. A town of scenic beauty, rich history and situated within easy reach of Madrid, Segovia has ample sights and experiences with which to entertain and astound visitors. Segovia is approximately one hour from Madrid by car and only 35 minutes by train.
Climate
The weather in Segovia is cool and dry due to the high altitude and the mountainous terrain which is verdant and dotted with evergreen forests of pine and juniper. The average temperature throughout the year is just 11.5 ° C, providing a welcome relief from the scorching heat of Coastal resorts during the Spanish summer.
The Old Town
This is Spain at its most charming. Segovia is a maze of narrow, cobbled streets, many of which may only be accessed by foot, and roaming these at will, tourists are bound to stumble upon one of the numerous and beautiful Romanesque churches. The village atmosphere gives the town a sleepy, laid back energy.
Roman Aqueduct
Set to the southeast of the town, the aqueduct is over 800 m long and is the biggest and most pristine example of its period anywhere in the world. It is said to have been originally constructed in the 1st Century, with later reconstruction taking place in the 13th and 16th Century.
The Alcázar Castle
This is said to be the inspiration for Walt Disney’s famous castle and it is easy to see why- its grace and simplicity are iconic. Historically, Alcazar was the residence of Queen Isabel at the time when she agreed to fund Chrisopher Columbus to make the sea voyage that would lead to the discovery of the Americas.
Camino de Santiago
Segovia is one of the picturesque towns en route to the famous pilgrim’s route which draws thousands to the area every year. Walkers that complete 100 km of the route on foot are eligible for the compostela, a certificate that is awarded to pilgrims. Originally, pilgrimage was made to visit the remains of Saint James at the end point of the journey in Santiago. These days the journey may be undertaken as a religious retreat or simply to enjoy the awe inspiring views and the camaraderie that springs up amongst fellow walkers.
Segovia is a historical town with a distinctly peaceful air that is well worth a visit for those who seek more than a sun tan.
