San Sebastian, also known as Donostia, is situated in Northern Spain on the Bay of Biscay. It is edged with green beautiful mountains on one side and the most beautiful beaches on the other. With the Pyrynees close by, the city is a good base from which to experience excellent skiing and snow sports. The city has approximately 185,000 residents and has an appealing vibrancy and modernity while retaining a relaxed old world charm.

Beaches

The three main beaches are Ondaretta, Playa de Gros and the well known Playa de la Concha which is made up of a wide cove of sand and a clear blue sea. Santa Clara is a gorgeous island just offshore to Playa de la Concha. Boat trips leave from the pier regularly, or if you are a confident swimmer, you may wish to do as the locals do and go under your own steam. Ondaretta is also popular but with a calmer atmosphere, whereas Playa de Gros is not well visited because of pollution.

Fiesta

The Procession of Drummers, or Tamborrada, begins only at midnight on the 19th of January every year and continues till midday the following day. The town gives up on any idea of sleep as its inhabitants converge in the streets to beat drums and whatever else that makes an impressive noise. Musical accompaniments are played, including compositions by Raimundo Sarriegi, a renowned composer who wrote them especially for the festival. Other fiestas include Semana Grande during August which has massive fireworks displays, music and revelling, the Tinkers Festival and San Sebastian Day.

The Old Town

Narrow bustling streets provide a wealth of eateries and bars to explore. Sample the excellent seafood of the area or try a selection of tapas for a more informal eating experience at a bar. There is also an energetic nightlife to be experienced with a variety of clubs to suit all tastes, many of which, in accordance with the Spanish schedule of late suppers and late nights, stay open until the early hours of the morning. Visit Paseo de la Concha area for upmarket venues or go to Reyes Católicos, an area favoured by students for its more relaxed and inexpensive clubs.

Sights

Constitution Square can be found in the centre of the city and dates back to medieval times. It is surrounded by numbered balconies from which Spanish aristocracy viewed bullfights taking place down in the square. Other places of interest include Zurriola Bridge- a futuristic vision with its columns of lamps in the expressionist style.

San Sebastian is truly able to offer visitors an astounding array of activities and experience with its beaches, mountains and fabulous food.
